Seeing the Pacific Ocean for the first time
San Francisco, CA USA octobre 2009

I met Mabrouck Rachedi during a book fair in Metz in June 2009. We stayed in contact and explored San Francisco one day when he was here for a few days during his tenure with the University of Iowa Writing Program. At this point, I'd be so bold as to say he is one of my best friends, at least from afar!

I had the privilege of reading his previous novels this past year and although my French is weak, I enjoy his work. He writes with humor, which has the effect of softening what can sometimes be sad, or at least bittersweet, circumstances.

So to you, my one remaining reader (hi Martina!), I am pleased to announce the release of his new book, La Petite Malika, on September 15, cowritten by his sister Habiba Mahany, by publisher JC Lattès at bookstores throughout France and at amazon.fr. I can't wait to read it!

  3. Haha, and as always I was so proud that I understood the first (the French, ha!) part of this post.

After "The little king" now it's "The little queen". (My Arabic is a little bit better than my French - but both are bad, so ...)

  4. Oh hey, I didn't know Malik and Malika meant king and queen! That actually adds a whole new dimension to the stories...

  5. I thought it might be some wordplay ... now I am really wondering if I should give it a try ... I read some of the comments on amazon.fr and understood most ... as long as I don't have to talk French ... might be okay ... thinking. Now that you have made so much promotion, lol. And I really like Petit Malik's book cover. And I managed Le Petit Nicolas ... so ...

  6. Hey, I wrote a review of Petit Malik on Amazon! The thought occurred to me after I wrote it that what I got from the book was something completely different than what a more fluent French speaker would understand. I'm waiting for the day that someone buys it based on my review and then wonders whether I'd read the same book.

  7. Yes, of course I have read your review ... was the first one.

    I am wondering if I am a little bit over-ambitious right now ... duh ... .

  8. Being completely inept in a language never stopped me...

  9. Me - in the case of French - this makes me unhappy - my French could be so much better if it wasn't for my French teacher in high school - I really didn't like her.

  10. She scarred you for life! For me, it was a crazy English teacher who was mean to me. All we read that term was Ernest Hemingway. I wasn't a Hemingway fan before that and now I can't stand him!

  12. Merci Toun!
